Ugandan-born, US-based film actor and producer Hemdee Kiwanuka continues to expand his global footprint with his latest project, Fireflies at El Mozote.

On this film, Kiwanuka serves as an Executive Producer, playing a key role in bringing to screen a powerful action war drama inspired by true events.
The film is produced by Elias Axume, Moctesuma Esparza, and Bob Yari distinguished producers whose combined experience anchors the project’s scale and impact.

Inspired by real events, Fireflies at El Mozote tells the story of the tragic massacre in El Mozote village in Morazán Province, El Salvador, widely regarded as one of the most devastating atrocities committed against civilians in modern Latin American history.

At its core, the film is a gripping coming-of-age story following a ten-year-old survivor navigating loss, resilience, and a search for justice.
Set against the backdrop of the 1980s civil war in El Salvador, the narrative also highlights the efforts of leftist guerrilla groups working to expose government death squads through an underground radio network, supported by an American journalist determined to reveal the truth.

The film features an international cast including Paz Vega, Yancey Arias, Mena Suvari, and Jeff Fahey.
It is written and directed by Ernesto Melara and also stars Arturo Ayala and Marlon Pérez.
Prior to this, Kiwanuka appeared in the 2025 film The Wrecker, further reinforcing his growing presence in international cinema.
Fireflies at El Mozote is now available on major streaming platforms.
