On Saturday, May 2, Aura Lounge in Kololo had a different spark from the usual, as the hangout celebrated its second anniversary. Revelers packed up the bar, as the world’s most iconic tequila brand- Don Julio, and renowned South African DJ and producer- DJ Maphorisa took centre stage to give partygoers a celebration to remember.
“Bengicela ungilalele nami… Ngiyazi sibaningi Sikhalela Kuwe…” the crowd sang in unison to one of the popular amapiano records, setting the tone for a night that was defined by music, luxury, and celebration.
The anniversary party was a cocktail of summer dresses, denim couture, high spenders, premium bottle service; creating an atmosphere that highlighted Aura as one of Kampala’s premium nightlife destinations.
From conversations from different revelers, it was clear that over the years, Aura has become more than just a bar and lounge, it is a second home, where they go to have a good time with friends. Conversations between drinks were filled with nostalgia, shared memories, and stories of unforgettable nights.
Some of those memories were literally on display, with banners and printed visuals lining the walkway and pillars leading to the venue. From signature in-house nights such as One-Off Tuesdays and Ignite Fridays, to Chop Life Sundays, hosted by socialite Sheilah Gashumba aka Lil Stunner, the display served as a visual reminder of Aura’s journey for the past two years.
The red carpet brought out Kampala’s fashionable elite and high rollers, proving once again that the city knows how to celebrate in style. From statement outfits, to dramatic runway-style entrances, guests matched the scale of the occasion.
As a luxury tequila brand, Don Julio leaned fully into the experience, delivering elevated bottle service and premium hospitality. Its signature presentation stood out throughout the night, with waitresses carrying bottles accompanied by lights, followed by the now-famous “Dorime” and “RIP” sound effects, that signaled the arrival of a bottle of Don Julio 1942, adding a theatrical flair to the night.
Speaking at the event, Judie Nandekya, the Senior Brand Manager for Tequila and Rum East Africa, described the partnership with Aura was a natural fit. “Partnering with Aura Lounge always comes naturally for us. Seeing them commemorate two years makes us proud. We are happy that we have walked an amazing journey with them as valued partners. Congratulations to Aura Bar and Lounge for reaching this milestone, and we hope to celebrate more together,” she said.
The night’s soundtrack was carefully curated, blending Afro-electronic, Afro-house, Hip-Hop, and dancehall. Sets came from DJs- City Girl, Selector Jay, DJ Jose, and Don Julio brand ambassador- DJ Dash, Don Julio 1942 ambassadors- DJ Spinny, Dj Dash, and Sheilah Gashumba, all backed up by hype masters who kept the crowd fully engaged.
DJ Maphorisa took over the decks in the wee hours of Sunday morning, and the crowd responded with renewed energy. Some pulled out their phones to capture the moment, others stood watching closely, while many simply danced.
Dressed in his signature designer streetwear and gold grills, he moved effortlessly through Amapiano, Gqom, Afro-house, and soulful club records. His set was marked by technical precision, teasing fan-favorite songs before unleashing explosive drops that sent the venue into synchronized chants and movement.
By the time he stepped off the decks, the crowd was exhausted in the best way possible, a fitting end to Aura’s second anniversary, celebrated in full Don Julio style.
