Bobi Wine has opened up about the unexpected beginnings of his now-famous love story with his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi (née Itungo).

In a recent interview, the National Unity Platform (NUP) president revealed that the two were far from friends when they first crossed paths.
According to Bobi Wine, he and Barbie were worlds apart in personality and lifestyle.
“I didn’t even like her because she was talking too much, that Jesus business and all that, and I was a bad boy from the ghetto,” he said. “I was an actor. I was in my final year at university studying Music, Dance and Drama.”
Their first meeting happened at the National Theatre, where they were both acting in a play. Bobi Wine played the president, while Barbie was cast as the first lady — a coincidence that would later foreshadow their influential partnership.
Despite their differences, something about Barbie’s personality struck Bobi Wine. Over time, what began as a working relationship slowly grew into friendship.
“It was this stark difference that somehow struck the chord between us,” he shared. The two eventually grew closer, becoming close friends, then best friends — and the rest, as the singer-turned-politician says, is history.
Today, Bobi Wine and Barbie are celebrated as one of Uganda’s most influential and inspiring power couples, but their journey began with a surprising twist: they initially didn’t get along at all.
