Music promoter Nobat Events has accused singer Eddy Kenzo, the president of the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), of attempting to dodge accountability by threatening to resign from his leadership position.

This follows a leaked audio that surfaced over the weekend in which Kenzo expressed frustration with the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development for delaying the release of the remaining UGX 5 billion meant for the artists’ SACCO. In the recording, Kenzo hinted at resigning from his role, saying he was tired of being frustrated by government processes.

However, on Monday, Kenzo made a U-turn, announcing that he would remain as UNMF president after receiving several calls from government officials who assured him that his concerns would be addressed.

Nobat Events, who has been openly critical of the federation’s leadership, claimed that Kenzo’s resignation threat was merely a tactic to divert attention from accountability issues surrounding the UGX 5 billion that was earlier released.

“The money given to him requires accountability and he was being asked for it. The accountability he was showing was for people and not how much he gave them,” Nobat said.

“Kenzo forgot this isn’t about excitement like in music but a system of government where money has to be accounted for when used.”

He further alleged that the government is using Kenzo and the UNMF as a political tool to weaken Bobi Wine’s influence, given how powerful musicians have become in shaping public opinion.

“The government knows how influential musicians can be. They are using Kenzo to counter Bobi Wine’s influence,” Nobat added.
