Veteran singer Jackie Chandiru has boldly criticized the current state of Uganda’s music industry, saying it has “been dead for years” and is now flooded with what she calls bubblegum music.

Speaking during a podcast interview, the former Blu*3 star expressed deep frustration with the direction the industry has taken, noting that passion and artistic quality have been replaced by quick fixes and money-chasing.

According to Chandiru, the industry lost its structure a long time ago and has never fully recovered.

“At the moment we don’t have a music industry. It collapsed long time ago — it has not been here for a long time,” she said. “I personally don’t release music because I don’t like mixing with bubblegum music.”

Chandiru, who has been on and off the music scene in recent years, noted that many artists today are more focused on survival than craft. She believes this approach is slowly diminishing the value of Ugandan music.

“People sing to survive — that’s the problem I have with them. They are after getting money, buying a ride, but don’t care about quality,” she added.
