Eddy Kenzo, the President of the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) and a presidential advisor on creatives, has given fresh hope to the entertainment industry by confirming that the long-awaited amendment of the copyright law is on track.

Speaking in an interview with BBS, Kenzo revealed that Parliament had already taken the first step, with the amendment bill presented for its first reading. He added that the process would soon progress to the second reading and eventual debate.
“I think the amendment was brought for the first reading in Parliament. It will be brought back for the second reading, then the debate will continue, and I expect it to be amended soon, as I was promised by Parliament. It will happen because if it fails, that will be a betrayal, and the President can’t allow it to happen,” Kenzo said.
The award-winning singer emphasized that the amendment is not just a formality but a crucial step toward empowering artists.
According to him, once passed, the law will secure the ownership rights of creators, ensuring that artists not only earn from their works but also build lasting wealth from their intellectual property.
Kenzo stressed that failure to amend the law would amount to a betrayal of Uganda’s creative community. However, he expressed strong confidence that the government is committed to protecting and uplifting the arts sector through this legislative reform.
